Bambo Toys is the first toy store specialising in renewable bamboo - which gives all the joy of safe, durable, beautiful wooden toys but bamboo is forest-free! Bambo is an educational and creative space, nurturing young minds with positive and socially sustainable products.
Our Mission
Bambo Toys specialises firstly in providing a range of toys that is both safe and educational. Our toy range is meticulously selected, comprising only exceptional quality toys that will engage and expand young minds. Some of our toys are recycled, or made from rubberwood, a byproduct of latex-producing trees. Many of our toys are award-winning. Many of our toys are manufactured from durable, versatile tree-free bamboo. All of our toys meet or exceed the minimum requirements for toy safety in Australia, Europe and USA.
We strive to stock products that are thoughtfully presented with minimal packaging, have recycled components and generate minimal waste during production. Our toys and games support fair-trade and ethical work practices in the country of origin.
About us
The vision of Bambo Toys started while playing with my nephews: not enough affordable, good-wood toys. While many of us adore the beauty, durability and touch of high-quality wooden toys, what about the forests that produce them? As both an engineer and a sustainability consultant, I began to search for and to design alternative “good-wood” toys.
Bamboo quickly appeared as an excellent alternative – the fastest growing grass in the world! Bamboo is lightweight, extremely durable and has been used in construction for thousands of years. It is the most sustainable “wood-like” product, with regrowth taking between only 3 to 7 years. I quickly discovered that some of the most awarded and respected toy companies in the world- such as HaPe International and EverEarth - were also experimenting with bamboo toys, with both companies just releasing beautiful bamboo collections.
And so the bamboo revolution has officially arrived on the toy market! It is only just here though. This means that not every toy we love is currently made from bamboo. So some of our products are made from rubberwood- the newest ‘earth-friendly’ wood to come to market. Rubberwood toys are made from the byproduct of latex-producing trees. Instead of burning the tree after it has finished producing sap, it is processed to create products such as toys. Rubberwood is not as strong or as durable as bamboo, and is mostly used for indoor or lower-strength applications. Bambo Toys will continue to expand our unique bamboo collection as more educational bamboo toys come to market in 2012.
How is Bambo Toys different?
1. The first toy store specialising in safe, educational and tree-free toys
Many stores have some “earth-friendly” products, some “wooden toys”, some “educational toys” – it can be quite confusing. At Bambo Toys, most of our toys are all of these things, minimum! Many of our toys are made from bamboo, the most sustainable resource on the planet, although some of our toys are rubberwood, recycled or organic corn. So our toys have all the joy of safe, durable, beautiful wooden toys but are forest-free or at least forest-friendly!
2. Safety comes first: If there's no test report, we won't stock it!
All of our toys are individually selected only if, at minimum, they pass the required toy safety standards for Australia, Europe and U.S.A. Many of our toys exceed these standards. On our website, you will find the test reports for every toy for your reading (coming soon). If there’s no test report, we won’t stock it !
3. Affordable – why pay retail prices when you shop online?
Wooden toys are already more expensive than plastic toys but why pay high retail prices in addition?
Many online stores sell their toys at retail price, the same tag as an actual store. Sometimes, the online store sells the product cheaper than retail but charges high shipping costs to recover the profit. Bambo Toys is committed to maintaining ‘online’ product and shipping pricing. When you make a purchase at Bambo Toys, we guarantee that you will be offered online, or lower than RRP, pricing.
4. Green procurement policy
BamboToys has a green procurement policy. This means that we deal only with companies that have an accredited environmental management policy ISO14001. This International Standard (ISO) is a stringent certification process – the only way to ensure that a company is actually “green”.
